How is the required final exam score calculated?

The required final exam score is calculated with this formula:

Required Final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight

For example, if your current grade is 85%, you want a 90% in the course, and the final is worth 30% of your grade: (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7% — meaning an A is not reachable through the final alone, and you would need extra credit.

Your current grade counts for the remaining 70% (1 − 0.30) of the course, so the higher the final's weight, the more the exam can move your grade in either direction.
