UK degree classification boundaries
| Classification | Weighted average |
|---|---|
| First-Class Honours (First) | 70% and above |
| Upper Second-Class (2:1) | 60–69% |
| Lower Second-Class (2:2) | 50–59% |
| Third-Class Honours | 40–49% |
| Fail | Below 40% |
Most UK universities use these boundaries, but weighting between years varies (final year typically counts most, first year often does not count). Check your university's specific regulations.
How is a UK degree classification calculated?
UK universities average your module marks weighted by credits: each module's mark is multiplied by its credit value, summed, then divided by total credits. A standard full-time year is 120 credits, usually split into modules of 15, 20, or 30 credits.
Most universities also weight by year of study — a common scheme counts the final year for 60-70% of the classification and the second year for the rest, with the first year required only as a pass. Some apply "borderline" rules that bump students within 1-2% of a boundary if enough credits sit in the higher band.
